# ADHD's Wider Spotlight: How Defocused Attention Fuels Creativity

For decades, ADHD research was framed almost entirely around what is missing: sustained attention, impulse control, executive function. A cluster of recent studies argues that the same attention patterns also carry a measurable creative upside — and that the difference is not less thinking, but wider thinking. [1][2]

The clearest statement of this view comes from a 2026 review in iScience led by Constructor University neuroscientist Radwa Khalil, with co-authors from French research institutions. It synthesizes findings across attention and creativity research to argue that 'defocused attention' — a broader attentional field that takes in more information at once — supports exploratory thinking and unexpected idea combinations, even as it makes single-goal concentration harder. ## 1. What the review actually claims

Khalil's paper, titled 'Attention Unleashed: creative therapy for thoughtful transformation', does not claim ADHD causes creativity. Its argument is narrower and better supported: attention and creativity draw on overlapping neural networks, so traits that look purely like impairments in one context can be functional in another. The mechanism the authors highlight is free-associative thought — letting ideas move in unexpected directions. That same process shows up in the clinical literature as distractibility and mind-wandering. It is one cognitive tendency described by two different vocabularies depending on whether the task rewards exploration or focus. [1]

The review also frames a practical implication: structured creative activity — art, music, dance, writing — may give people with ADHD a productive channel for defocused attention while engaging the same circuits involved in attention control. Roughly 8% of children worldwide are affected by ADHD, so non-pharmacological options matter. [1]

## 2. The strongest experimental evidence: insight vs. analysis

A separate 2026 study from Drexel University, published in Personality and Individual Differences, tested the idea directly. Researchers asked 299 undergraduates aged 18–33 to solve compound remote associates (CRA) problems — find a fourth word linking three given words, such as pine, crab and sauce (answer: apple). After each problem, participants reported how the solution arrived: as sudden 'insight' — an Aha! moment emerging from unconscious processing — or through conscious, step-by-step analytic reasoning. [2][3]

Participants with the strongest ADHD symptoms solved about as many problems overall as those with the weakest symptoms, but they solved significantly more of them by insight than by analysis. Those with the weakest symptoms split roughly evenly between the two modes. [2][3]

The more surprising result was non-linear: both the lowest and the highest ADHD-symptom groups significantly outperformed participants with intermediate-level symptoms. Being very high or very low in executive control both helped — by different routes. [2]

## 3. Why 'filtered out' is the key phrase

The hypothesis the Drexel team tested is that weaker executive filtering gives easier access to remote, non-obvious associations. Efficient executive control is very good at suppressing candidate ideas that look irrelevant — which is exactly what you want on a focused task, and exactly what you do not want when the answer depends on a distant link. This is consistent with earlier design-research findings that impulsive thought tends to help divergent thinking (generating many options), while convergent thinking (evaluating and selecting) requires the deliberate control that ADHD often makes harder. The advantage, in other words, is stage-specific rather than global. [4]

## 4. What earlier research established

The 2026 papers sit on top of a longer literature that is genuinely mixed. A widely cited 2020 review in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews by Hoogman and colleagues examined behavioral studies, stimulant effects and neural underpinnings, and found evidence for creative strengths in ADHD alongside considerable inconsistency across measures and samples. A 2022 study in Frontiers in Psychiatry from the same research group characterized creative thinking and real-world creative achievement in relation to ADHD and autism symptoms, and represents one of the more careful attempts to separate laboratory divergent-thinking scores from actual creative output. Presented at the 2025 ECNP Congress in Amsterdam, an observational study also linked ADHD to higher creativity and pointed to mind-wandering as the mediating factor — the same mechanism the iScience review emphasizes. That work was described by ECNP as observational and not peer-reviewed at the time of presentation. [7]

## 5. Accuracy box: what is solid and what is not

Recent research does not say ADHD is a gift; it says a wider attentional spotlight produces more remote associations and more insight-driven solutions, which is an advantage when a problem requires an unexpected connection and a liability when it requires sustained single-goal focus.
