AI in healthcare is one of the most discussed — and most misunderstood — technology stories of recent years. The reality is a lot more practical than the headlines, with real progress in specific areas and ongoing caution in others.

Imaging is where AI has made the biggest measurable difference. Tools that help radiologists flag suspicious findings on scans for conditions like certain cancers and eye diseases are now used in many hospitals. These systems work best as a second set of eyes, not a replacement for trained clinicians.

Triage support is another area gaining ground. AI can help prioritize which scans or test results a doctor reviews first, ensuring the most urgent cases get attention sooner. The doctor still makes the final call.

Administrative AI may matter most to patients in the short term. Tools that draft visit notes from a recorded conversation give clinicians more time for actual care. Many hospitals report reduced burnout and shorter wait times after rolling these out.

Caution is still warranted in several areas. AI systems trained mostly on data from one population may perform less well on others, so independent validation across diverse groups matters. Patient privacy, consent, and data security remain front and center.
