Major browsers have quietly become powerful privacy tools, but many of their best features sit behind menus most people never open. A few minutes of setup can meaningfully reduce tracking without breaking the sites you love.

Start with tracking protection. Look for a setting called "Enhanced Tracking Protection," "Strict mode," or similar. This blocks third-party cookies and many cross-site trackers automatically. Most sites still work fine; the few that break usually have an easy per-site toggle.

Enable HTTPS-only mode. This forces every site you visit to use an encrypted connection, with a clear warning page if a site doesn't support it. It's a small change with a big security upside, especially on public Wi-Fi.

DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) encrypts the lookup that turns a website name into an address, hiding your browsing destinations from your network operator. Most browsers offer this in their privacy settings with a list of trusted providers.

Consider a privacy-focused search engine as your default. Several options no longer track queries or build advertising profiles, and search quality has improved significantly in recent years.

Finally, review your installed extensions every few months. Each one can read page content, so fewer is safer. Stick to extensions from reputable developers with a clear privacy policy and recent updates.
