# How Much Physical Activity Do Adults Need? What the WHO and CDC Recommend

*Health · 2026-06-07 · BrainWavePost Staff · 6 min read*

> A fully sourced summary of adult physical-activity recommendations, based on official guidance from the World Health Organization and the U.S. CDC.

> **How this article is sourced** _(info)_
>
> Every recommendation comes from the World Health Organization (WHO) 'Guidelines on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour' and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). [1][2] This is general health information, not medical advice.

Regular physical activity is one of the most important things adults can do for their health. The WHO states that it reduces the risk of noncommunicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers, and it also improves mental health and quality of life. [1]

## The WHO's minimum recommendation for adults

The WHO recommends that adults aged 18–64 do at least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, or at least 75–150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, or an equivalent combination. [1]

- **150–300** — minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (WHO) [1]
- **75–150** — minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (WHO) [1]
- **2+** — days per week of muscle-strengthening activity (WHO and CDC) [1][2]

## What the CDC adds

The U.S. CDC's Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans align closely with the WHO. The CDC also emphasises that any amount of physical activity is better than none, and that adults should move more and sit less throughout the day. [2]

## What counts as moderate intensity?

- Brisk walking (you can talk but not sing). [2]
- Water aerobics. [2]
- Riding a bicycle on level ground. [2]
- Dancing. [2]

## What counts as vigorous intensity?

- Running or jogging. [2]
- Swimming laps. [2]
- Riding a bicycle fast or on hills. [2]
- Playing basketball. [2]

> **Individual needs vary** _(note)_
>
> The WHO and CDC both note that activity recommendations should be adapted for people with chronic conditions, disabilities, or who are pregnant. People in these groups should seek advice from a qualified health professional. [1][2]
