# Minecraft 26.2 'Chaos Cubed' Explained: Sulfur Caves, Sulfur Cubes & Vulkan

*Tech · 2026-04-29 · BrainWavePost Staff · 8 min read*

> Mojang's next Java Edition game drop, Chaos Cubed (26.2), adds a new sulfur caves biome, the shape-shifting Sulfur Cube mob, sulfur and cinnabar block sets, and brings Vulkan rendering into snapshot testing. Here's what's confirmed so far, with sources.

Mojang has begun rolling out snapshots for Minecraft Java Edition 26.2, officially named 'Chaos Cubed'. According to the Minecraft Wiki, the drop is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026 and centres on a new underground biome — the sulfur caves — along with a curious new mob and a major rendering upgrade.

The first snapshot, 26.2 Snapshot 1, was published by the Java Team on the official Minecraft.net news site on 7 April 2026. A parallel preview for Bedrock Edition (Preview 26.20.23) shipped a week earlier on 31 March 2026, introducing the same Chaos Cubed features.

>
> Mojang now ships smaller, more frequent feature updates called 'game drops' instead of one big yearly release. 26.2 is the second drop of 2026, following 26.1 'Tiny Takeover' (released 24 March 2026), which added baby-mob variants.

## Sulfur caves: a new underground biome

The headline addition is the sulfur caves biome, which Mojang describes as generating naturally underground and inside hills or mountains, with bands of sulfur and cinnabar blocks running through it. The biome spawns the new Sulfur Cube mob alongside existing Cave Spiders, and contains 'Sulfur Pools' filled with Potent Sulfur.

Above ground, players can now spot Sulfur Springs — naturally generating surface features made of sulfur, potent sulfur and magma blocks, in four sizes (small, medium, large, extra large). They serve as a visual signal that a sulfur cave system lies below.

## The Sulfur Cube: a mob that takes the shape of what it eats

The Sulfur Cube is the most unusual addition. According to the official changelog, when a player interacts with one while holding a block, the cube absorbs that block and turns into a physical, interactive object — players can punch and push it, and it will not take fall or player damage while a block is inside it.

Each block type pushes the cube into a different 'archetype' with its own physics. Mojang lists nine archetypes in the snapshot notes:

- Regular — stone and mineral blocks (medium speed and bounce, buoyant)
- Bouncy — wooden blocks (fast, very bouncy, buoyant)
- Slow Flat — metal blocks (slow, low bounce)
- Fast Flat — organic blocks (fast, low bounce)
- Light — wool blocks (slow, high bounce, high air drag, buoyant)
- Fast Sliding — icy blocks (fast, no bounce, low friction)
- Slow Sliding — mushroom blocks (slow, no bounce, low friction)
- High Resistance — Soul Sand and Soul Soil (very slow, low bounce)
- Sticky — Honeycomb Block (golf-ball physics that stick on landing)

When killed, a Sulfur Cube splits into two smaller cubes (similar to slimes), and small cubes can be tempted with slime balls and grown back into large ones. A large Sulfur Cube can be picked up with an empty bucket, producing a new 'Bucket of Sulfur Cube' item, and dispensers can swap blocks inside it or shear it to remove the block.

> **What this enables** _(tip)_
>
> Because the cube becomes a physics object whose behaviour depends on the block inside it, community creators have already speculated about new redstone contraptions, marble-run-style maps and minigames built around feeding cubes the right material. Mojang is gathering feedback on this in the snapshot phase.

## New blocks: sulfur and cinnabar sets

Chaos Cubed adds two full decorative block families. The Minecraft Wiki's 26.2 entry lists the following new blocks for both sulfur (yellow) and cinnabar (red):

- Base block (Sulfur, Cinnabar) plus Slabs, Stairs and Walls
- Polished variant plus Slabs, Stairs and Walls
- Bricks variant plus Slabs, Stairs and Walls
- Chiseled Sulfur and Chiseled Cinnabar
- Sulfur Spike — a new pointed block that generates throughout the biome
- Potent Sulfur — generates in water pools and emits a nausea-causing gas cloud on the surface

Potent Sulfur is the most mechanically interesting of the new blocks: when placed under up to four water source blocks, it produces a gas cloud on the surface that spreads up to three blocks across adjacent water and applies the Nausea effect — a new environmental hazard inside the biome.

## Vulkan rendering: a quiet but major change

Alongside the gameplay features, Mojang is using 26.2 to begin migrating Java Edition's renderer from OpenGL to Vulkan. The snapshot adds a new 'Graphics API' option in Video Settings with three values: Default, Prefer Vulkan and Prefer OpenGL.

Mojang says this is part of the long-term plan to bring 'Vibrant Visuals' (the modern shader-style lighting already on Bedrock) to Java Edition, and notes that under Vulkan the game will prefer a dedicated GPU over integrated graphics. macOS users get Vulkan via MoltenVK, which translates Vulkan calls to Metal.

> **Still experimental** _(note)_
>
> Mojang explicitly calls Vulkan support 'experimental' for now, and warns it 'may not be as performant or stable' than OpenGL during testing. Players seeing graphical issues can switch back to OpenGL in Video Settings or report bugs at bugs.mojang.com.

## Other notable changes

- New entity attributes — minecraft:bounciness, minecraft:friction_modifier and minecraft:air_drag_modifier — allow data packs to tune entity physics (Mojang, snapshot notes).
- minecraft:knockback_resistance can now go as low as -2.0, allowing entities to be knocked back further than normal.
- Data Pack version bumped to 101.2; Resource Pack version to 85.
- Rendering now uses a reversed depth buffer to reduce Z-fighting on most hardware.
- A small fix mirrors the baby Hoglin's and Zoglin's left-ear texture correctly.

## When can you play it?

26.2 is currently in the snapshot phase on Java Edition and the Preview phase on Bedrock Edition. The Minecraft Wiki lists a planned full release in Q2 2026, but Mojang has not committed to a specific date — historically, drops ship when feedback from snapshots stabilises rather than on a fixed calendar.

To try it now, opt into snapshots in the Minecraft Launcher (Java) or join the Bedrock Preview programme via the Microsoft Store / Xbox Insider Hub on supported platforms. Always back up your worlds before loading them into a snapshot — Mojang warns experimental builds can corrupt save files.
