The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The name comes from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer (pomodoro is Italian for tomato) that he used as a university student. [1]

## The six official steps

1. Choose a task you'd like to get done. [1]
2. Set the Pomodoro timer for 25 minutes. [1]
3. Work on the task until the timer rings. [1]
4. When it rings, put a checkmark on a piece of paper. [1]
5. If you have fewer than four checkmarks, take a short break (3–5 minutes), then go back to step 2. [1]
6. After four pomodoros, take a longer break (15–30 minutes), reset your checkmark count, and start again. [1]

## Why the technique uses fixed intervals

The official site explains that the fixed 25-minute interval is designed to reduce the impact of interruptions and to make abstract time feel concrete, so it is easier to estimate how long work actually takes. [2]

> Cirillo's rule: a pomodoro is indivisible. If an interruption is unavoidable, the current pomodoro is considered void and you start a new one from scratch. [1]
