# Prompt-Writing Basics: Getting Better Answers from AI

*AI · 2026-03-09 · BrainWavePost Staff*

> The way you phrase a question changes the answer you get. A few simple habits dramatically improve the quality of AI responses.

Talking to AI well isn't a hidden skill — it's mostly about being clear with yourself first. The same habits that make a good email or work request also produce better AI responses.

Start with context. Tell the AI who the answer is for, what it's used for, and any constraints that matter. "Write a thank-you note to a long-time customer who just placed their tenth order, friendly but professional, under 80 words" beats "write a thank-you note" every time.

Show, don't just tell. If you have a sample of the tone or format you want, paste it in. Examples teach style faster than adjectives.

Ask for what you actually want at the end. A bullet list, a table, three options to choose from, a one-paragraph summary — being specific about format saves a round of back-and-forth.

Iterate instead of restarting. If the first answer is close, ask for changes: "Make it warmer," "Cut to half the length," "Add a clearer call to action." Each refinement narrows in on the result you want.

Finally, check the output. AI can sound confident while being wrong, especially with names, numbers, and recent events. Treat answers as drafts, verify anything that matters, and you'll get the productivity boost without the surprises.
