# What Sensory-Friendly UX Looks Like in AI Apps

> Calmer interfaces benefit everyone, and they're especially valuable in AI apps where outputs can be long, fast, or unpredictable. Here are the patterns we look for.

Good interface design helps everyone, but for people with sensory sensitivities — common across many neurodivergent experiences — small design choices can be the difference between a tool that supports daily life and one that quietly drains energy.

AI apps add new design challenges. Streaming text appears word-by-word, results can be long, and unexpected pop-ups for new features can feel jarring. Thoughtful AI products give users control over these moments.

Look for adjustable motion. Reducing or pausing animation, slowing down streaming responses, and turning off auto-play media all reduce sensory load without losing core functionality.

Color and contrast matter. Calm color palettes, the option to switch to dark mode, and high-contrast text settings all help. Avoid relying on color alone to convey meaning — clear icons and labels work better for everyone.

Sound and notifications should be opt-in. A quiet default, with the option to add subtle sounds for specific events, respects environments where audio cues would be disruptive.
