# USB-C Universal Charging: What It Means for You

*Tech · 2025-06-12 · BrainWavePost Staff*

> With USB-C now standard across phones, laptops, and accessories, the charger drawer is finally getting simpler. Here's what to know to avoid common pitfalls.

The shift to USB-C as a near-universal connector is one of the more quietly impactful tech changes of recent years. From smartphones to laptops, e-readers to game controllers, a single cable shape now covers most of your daily devices.

But not all USB-C cables are equal. Cables differ in data speed, power delivery (PD) wattage, and whether they support video output. A cheap charging-only cable may top out at 60W, while a premium cable can carry 240W and 40Gbps of data.

When buying a charger, look for the total wattage and the number of ports. A 65W charger handles most laptops; a 100W or 140W charger covers heavy workstations. Multi-port chargers with GaN (gallium nitride) technology stay cooler and smaller than older designs.

Power Delivery negotiates voltage automatically, so you can safely plug a small phone into a 100W charger — it will only draw what it needs. The reverse isn't always true: a low-wattage charger may charge a laptop very slowly, or only maintain its battery during use.

For travel, one good 65W GaN charger plus two quality cables can replace a bag full of bricks. Look for chargers that fold their prongs and support multiple regional plug standards if you cross borders often.

The bottom line: USB-C is finally delivering on its promise of one cable for everything, but a small upfront investment in a couple of certified cables and a modern multi-port charger pays off in convenience for years.
