# What Is a Credit Score? A Sourced Beginner's Guide

*Business · 2026-06-06 · BrainWavePost Staff · 5 min read*

> A short, fully sourced explainer on credit scores using official definitions from the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

> Every definition here comes from the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an official U.S. government agency. [1][2][3] This is general financial education, not personalised advice.

The CFPB defines a credit score as 'a prediction of your credit behaviour, such as how likely you are to pay a loan back on time, based on information from your credit reports.' Lenders use it to help decide whether to offer you credit and on what terms. [1]

## Where the score comes from

Credit scores are calculated from the information in your credit reports, which are maintained by consumer reporting companies. The CFPB explains that the three nationwide companies in the U.S. are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. [2]

## What typically affects your score

According to the CFPB, the main factors that influence most credit scores are: [1]

- Your bill-paying history (whether you pay on time). [1]
- How much unpaid debt you have. [1]
- The number and type of loan accounts you have. [1]
- How long you have had your loan accounts open. [1]
- How much of your available credit you are using. [1]
- New applications for credit. [1]
- Whether you have had a debt sent to collection, a foreclosure, or a bankruptcy. [1]

## Check your credit report for free

The CFPB notes that, by federal law, you are entitled to free copies of your credit reports from the nationwide credit reporting companies through AnnualCreditReport.com, the only website authorised by federal law for this purpose. [3]
