# What Is USB-C? The Universal Connector Explained

USB-C (formally 'USB Type-C') is a small, oval-shaped connector standardised by the USB Implementers Forum, the non-profit that maintains the USB specifications. The USB-IF defines USB-C as a single connector type that supports data, video and power on the same cable. [1]

## Why the plug is reversible

Unlike the older rectangular USB-A plug, the USB-C connector is symmetrical: its 24 pins are mirrored top-to-bottom, so the plug works regardless of which way you insert it. This symmetry is part of the published USB Type-C specification maintained by USB-IF. [1]

## One cable for data, video and power

USB-C carries data using USB protocols (such as USB 2.0, USB 3.2 and USB4), can carry video using DisplayPort 'Alt Mode', and can deliver power using the USB Power Delivery (USB PD) specification. USB PD allows up to 240 W of power over a single cable under the latest revision, enough to charge most laptops. [1]

## Why the EU made it the standard

On 4 October 2022 the European Parliament adopted Directive (EU) 2022/2380, the so-called 'common charger' directive. Under this rule, USB-C became the mandatory charging port for a wide range of small and medium electronic devices sold in the EU — including mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, digital cameras, headphones, portable speakers and handheld game consoles — from 28 December 2024. Laptops have until 28 April 2026 to comply. [2][3]

The European Commission states the goal is to reduce electronic waste and consumer cost by letting people reuse a single charger across devices. [2]
